Baby Boomers were defined in the 1960s. The social changes, events and our music left permanent impressions on us. How old you were during a decade greatly affected how you turned out.
Those in their early 20s by 1970 were deeply affected by the Watergate scandal; the deaths of President Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King; the Vietnam war and the horror we felt when members of our family & friends came back in coffins.
Those born at the other end, after 1959, find it hard to connect to the assassination of President Kennedy or the rock music of the Beatles, Herman’s Hermits, the Mamas & Papas, Four Tops, the Temptations, the Platters, the Shirelles, Buddy Holly, the Drifters, the Tams, Otis Redding and other great music artists of the 50s and 60s. They were more likely to use illegal drugs even to an excessive degree. They were not subjected to the military draft, so to try to lump us all together is not quite correct.
Many of us are committed to marriage and still happily married to our high school sweethearts, and others have married and divorced …some more than once. The divorce rate was 50% and so changed the term that it began to seem not so taboo.
We hired on with a company, worked our way up the ladder and are relaxing in our pre-golden years. Some of us are retired early or we will retire in a few years and then there are us who are daring to embark on a new career. Many of us have found we are entrepreneurs and are starting a business from home. Many will never retire.
How about this for impacting society: the CEOs of GE, IBM & Ford are boomers; Bill Gates, Ron Howard, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Meg Ryan, Michael Jordan, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Sarah Palin, President Obama and George Bush are all boomers, as well as many more as you know.
In 2010, the economy IS the boomers! We represent the vast majority of the work force. There are 75 million of us; we ARE the economy in numbers too big to fail….
Aren’t We Too Big to Fail?
